This year in 2010, Monsoon from Bay of Bengal and from Arabian Sea were exceptionally strong, resulting extraordinary heavy rains in Pakistan. The record pouring down caused a countrywide massive and large scale flooding which is worst ever in the known history of this region.
In four days from 27th July to 30th July 2010, the rainfall was ten times more than the annual rainfall. In Islamabad 395mm rainfall was recorded. In Risalpur 415 mm, in Murree 373mm, in Cherat 372, in Gari Dupatta 346mm, in Saidu Sharif 339 and in Peshawar 333mm rainfall was recorded.
This severe rain spells hit southern Province of Balochistan in the second week of July 2010, followed by a second spell of heavy monsoon rains over Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, commenced in the last week of July 2010. These rains generated unprecedented flood flows in watercourses, channels and streams which feed all major rivers and tributaries of Indus River. As the north side is high in altitude due to mountain ranges, flow of flood water either in the rivers or out of them was southwards, hitting Punjab, Sindh and partially the area of Balochistan.
Losses and damages:
The figures provided by the government show that 20.36 million people in 78 districts have been affected with 1.9 million houses damaged or destroyed.1,961 people have died and 2,994 reported injured.
Over 132,000 Sq Km of area inundated by the flood waters including over 20,000 Sq Km of cultivated land. Road, bridge and rail network being the mainstay of communication links have been severely damaged besides colossal damage to the Housing Sector, totaling 1,910,439 houses to date. At present some 12,516 school facilities and 579 Medical Health facilities have been destroyed.
KHUBAIB FOUNDATION'S RELIEF ACTIVITIES
The aftermath of the devastating floods of Pakistan, Khubaib Foundation (KF) integrated all its efforts including that of its donor organization The IHH (INSANI YARDIM VAKFI) Turkey, and focused on areas hit hard by the ravaging floods. Fund Raising activities, distribution of cooked food / dry ration and first aid was part of the emergency relief response which has now extended to rehabilitation i.e. construction of model tent villages, reconstruction of obliterated settlements and disbursement of cash grants.
A. Food Distribution
(i) Cooked food items:
Khubaib Foundation distributed cooked food items at the following base camps / stations. Cooked food items were majorly prepared in Khubaib Foundations own makeshift kitchens with care to hygiene and quality.

600 families (3000 people) benefitted from slaughtering of 10 cows (Meat cooked and served)
200 prisoners at the Nowshera Jail consumed complete meals on the second day of Eid-ul-Fitar.
Charsadda
Cooked food distributed to 454 families (3124 persons) on daily basis in Charsadda from 02 August to 26 August 2010.

Khubaib’s base camp at Muzaffargarh is generously offering cooked food to 5000 persons on a daily basis from 22 August to 15 September 2010. After that, from 16th September to 19th September cooked food served to 2500 persons daily. Presently, there are 312 tents pitched in the tent village who are supplied on weekly basis the following items as dry food:
• Rice 5 kg • 1 kg cooking oil • 1 kg sugar • 1 kg dry milk
• 1 kg pulse • 0.25 kg tea leaves • 1 packet of vermicelli
Islamabad
• Some flood wrecked families from different parts of Pakistan with their leftover belongings moved to the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. In order to facilitate them in the month of Ramadan; cooked food was distributed as part of Ifftar package to 300 persons on daily basis during the whole month of Ramadan.
1. A. Meat:
A total of 50 cows (approximately 15, 000 kg of meat) were slaughtered. 1500 kg of meat was cooked with rice and curry and distributed amongst families in Nowshera and Muzaffargarh. The rest of the raw meat was distributed in Nowshera and Muzaffargarh.

• Cooking oil weighing 436 kg, packed dates weighing 692 kg, flour weighing 2600 kg, Rice bags weighing 900 kg, sugar bags weighing 750 kg, packed white beans weighing 800 kg, biscuits (Family Packs) 400 cartons distributed amongst 500 families.
• Meat packets weighing 2 kg distributed amongst 600 families.
Dera Ismail (D.I. Khan)
Rice weighing 5250 kg, flour bags weighing 5420 kg distributed amongst 300 families (1500 people).

Biscuits cartons (Family Packs) weighing 900 kg, 245 cartons of Juice equivalent to 1470 liters, 1500 kg of dry milk, and 50 cartons of baby cereal distributed amongst 1800 families.
2.A Tinned food items:
Tinned food items that were a part of the cargo sent by IHH Turkey which included red beans, white beans and similar items were distributed in D.I. Khan, Muzaffargarh and Sukkar.170 cartons each containing 24 tins of 1 kg (red and white beans) distributed amongst flood affected families.

Distribution of 150 ladies suits, 100 gent suits, 100 suits for boys and 100 for girls in D.I. Khan.

Two truck loads of cloths both used and new donated by the people of Pakistan were distributed amongst families in Muzaffargarh.

Distribution of 300 bags of kitchenware; 1 bag ideal for a family.
10. D. Eating Utensils (Kitchen Set):
Distribution of 300 bags of eating utensils; 1 bag ideal for a family.
11. D. Blankets:
Distribution of 1000 blankets.

1. E. Pre-Fabricated homes:
Pre-fab’s generously donated by IHH Turkey shall be assembled in Nowshera which will provide accommodation facilities and shall have mosques and schools.
2. E. Tents:
In Pir Paie, Nowshera a tent village with 70 tents accommodating 95 families has been established on modern lines with proper water / sanitation / sewerage system.
3. E. Medical camp:
To look after the sick, Nowshera tent village consists of a medical camp visited daily by NCHD (National Commission for Human Development) doctors. Patients are treated and offered the prescribed medicines free of cost. Services of Khubaib Medical camp are not limited for the tent settlers; since destitute people from the surrounding village are also cared for. On average, 250 to 300 patients are treated at Khubaib Medical Camp Nowshera.

4. E. Pre-Fabricated homes:
Assembly and construction of pre-fabricated homes donated by IHH Turkey is under progress. A total of 150 pre-fabricated homes shall be erected in different parts of Pakistan including Nowshera, D.I. Khan and Muzafargarh. InshAllah, before Eid-ul-Azha, 50 pre-fab’s homes will be erected. 50 kanals (605 square yards) of land in Muzaffargarh has been acquired for a year for the purpose of setting the pre-fabs. These pre-fabs will work as schools, mosques, medical camps as well as accommodate flood affected families until their houses are reconstructed.
5. E. Tents:
Two tent villages consisting of 205 tents are accommodating 312 affected families (1500 people). Tent villages have been built on modern lines with proper water, sewerage and sanitation system. Since the families prefer to cook on their own, dry ration is given to a family on demand for a full week.
6. E. Medical camp:
In all three delegations of doctors visited Pakistan since 28th July. The first two delegations served in the areas of district Muzaffargarh and district D.G. Khan covering around 10 to 12 days each with the rate of approximately three thousand patients examined everyday. The third delegation of doctors (comprising 10 members) visited very recently and showed interest in the up gradation and capacity building of District Hospital Nowshera.
2. As of now, to look after the sick, each tent village consists of a medical camp with a dedicated doctor who cares for the sick. Necessary medicines are stocked and inventory is updated every three days. All camp supervisors have established liaisons with district management including the nearest hospitals. To deal with emergency cases that can only be cared for in a proper hospital, the option of an ambulance service is also available.

A water filtration plant (motorized) along with a hand pump has been installed in Nowshera Tent Village which is sufficient for the need of the 95 families residing their in tents.

For provision of clean drinking water IHH Turkey has installed 3 hand pumps in Muzaffargarh. Plans for the installation of 05 out of 10 motorized / electric water filtration plants are under consideration and shall soon be finalized.
G. Water Filtration Plants:
Khubaib Foundation has received 10 motorized water filtration plants from it’s partner IHH in Turkey. 5 filtration plants are to be installed at various locations The remaining shall be installed after further need assessment.
H. Cash Grants:
Total Amount Distributed = Rs 40 million (PKR) equivalent to approx. 0.66 million Turkish Lira (TRY)

To uplift morals and support livelihood, a team from IHH Turkey distributed 10 million (PKR) equivalent to approx. 0.164 million Turkish Lira (TRY). The money was distributed amongst 200 families whereby each family received 50,000 (PKR).

A team from IHH Turkey distributed 10 million (PKR) equivalent to approx. 0.164 million (TRY). The money was distributed amongst 200 families whereby each family received 50,000 (PKR) equivalent to 823.99 (TRY).

To uplift morals and support livelihood, a team from IHH Turkey distributed 20 million (PKR) equivalent to approx. 0.328 million Turkish Lira (TRY). The money was distributed amongst 400 families whereby each family received 50,000 (PKR).
I. Eidi / Eid Gifts:
Distribution in Kyber Pakhtun Khwa:
Skardu
An amount of 0.1 million (PKR) equivalent to approx. 1640.48 Turkish Lira (TRY) was distributed amongst the lower management staff of Khubaib College Skardu.
Nowshera
Clothing, bangles, balloons, coloring books and gift hampers full of sweets were distributed amongst flood affected children. An amount of 12000 (PKR) equivalent to 196.86 (TYR) was distributed as Eidi amongst 120 children in Nowshera.
Haripur
Clothing, bangles, balloons, coloring books and gift hampers full of sweets were distributed amongst flood affected children. An amount of 24,000 (PKR) equivalent to 393.72 Turkish Lira (TYR) was distributed as Eidi amongst 420 children in Haripur. An amount of 14000 (PKR) equivalent to 2296.67 Turkish Lira (TYR) was distributed amongst the lower management staff of Khubaib College Haripur.

MSAL (Muhammadan School of Advanced Learning):
On the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitar an amount of 8200 (PKR) equivalent to 134.52 (TYR) was distributed amongst orphans girls.
J. Construction of Houses:
1. J. Province of Khyber Pakhtun khwa / Punjab:
Initially IHH Turkey proposed the construction of 100 houses at Nowshera, D.I. Khan and Muzaffargarh. Later on, the number was increased to 150. Groundbreaking ceremony and foundations for houses have bee laid. Khubaib Foundation firmly intends to complete reconstruction of 40 houses at the above mentioned locations, InshaAllah, before Eid-ul-Azha. Work for the completion of the remaining 110 houses shall proceed after Eid.
K. Relief Consignments:
1. K. Cargo plane:
A cargo plane carrying 68 tons of relief goods in two successions reached Chaklala Air Base, Rawalpindi. Relief goods donated by IHH Turkey were distributed in Skardu, Nowshera, Haripur and Muzaffargrah.
2. K. Cargo Train:
A train carrying 28 containers laden with relief goods reached Quetta Railway station. Relief goods donated by IHH Turkey are being distributed in Nowshera, D.I. Khan, Sukkar and Muzaffargarh.
L. Foreign Delegations:
From 1st August till September 2010, as many as 10 delegations comprising of doctors, businesspersons, donors, media persons and technical workers visited Pakistan. Delegations are still continuing to visit. Most of the delegations were from Turkey, received and hosted auspiciously by Khubaib Foundation in Pakistan. The delegation members surveyed the various flood hit areas and suggested wisely what ought to be done to alleviate sufferings of the flood hit populace. Generous monetary donations and donations in kind were also made.
M. Ray of Hope:
This indeed is not the end rather a bright young addition to the relief activities undertaken by Khubaib Foundation with unequivocal assistance from the IHH Turkey. This flood is regarded as greatest calamity in the living history of Pakistan which obliterated whole of villages, townships and large swathes of farmland, the raging waters turned everything in its path into ruins. Worst it may be; but call for the help of flood affectees was answered and burden of their woes shared by our brothers and sisters in faith as well as those apart. Extending help in the time of need has undoubtedly restored hope and uplifted morals. We sincerely and wholeheartedly thank IHH for acting swiftly and taking responsibility towards rehabilitation and restoration of life!
